PE and Physical Well Being

PE Vision

  • To enable all children to possess a range of gross and fine motor skills.
  • To recognise the needs of the human body and understand how to look after their body.
  • To develop a range of behaviours that sit alongside physical activity (linked to Real PE and Schools Games).

  • To enable all children to be confident at applying well-developed skills in a wider range of sporting activities and everyday activities.
  • To recognise the importance of how physical activity can positively affect physical and mental health.
  • To confidently swim, in a range of strokes, over a distance of 25m or greater by the end of year 6.

  • For children to develop a positive sense of personal identity and to have the self-confidence to try their best no matter their ability and enjoy it.
  • To develop a wider range of interpersonal skills

Together in God’s Promises, Goodness and Love:

  • Children to have an awareness and sensitivity of differing abilities that will enable them to succeed as an individual or as part of a team (sportsmanship).

Physical Education and Well Being Policy 2024

What we teach and how we teach it:

Class PE Lessons

All classes undertake two hours of PE each week.  One hour is dedicated to the ‘Real PE’ scheme of work.  The second hour develops the application of the skills learned within Real PE to other sports and physical activity:  movement (including dance and gymnastics), throwing, catching; developing flexibility, control and technique and balance; swimming; and OAA.  This is done through a range of sports and adapted games to support inclusions.

Real PE

The ‘Real PE’ programme focuses on two categories of physical activity: learning behaviours and Fundamental Movement Skills (FUNs).

 Learning Behaviours:

Each half term has a learning focus on a different learning behaviour which we believe are as important as skill acquisition:

-Health and Fitness

-Applying Physical

Fundamental Movement Skills (FUNs):

-Agility (reaction and response; ball chasing)

-Balance (static, seated, dynamic)

-Co-ordination (sending and receiving)

Intra-school competitions take place all-year-round with the Year 6 Sports Captains organising and officiating the matches, as well as recording and sharing the results. These competitions include ‘Sports Day,’ which is held annually every summer. Records from the events for every Year Group are celebrated and displayed in the Main Hall.

We provide a wide range of extra-curricular sporting clubs and have links with local coaches to help provide a wider offer to our children:

Active Travel

  • Children are encouraged to walk or 'park and stride' to school as well as increase their physical activity at the weekends.  As a result, children are awarded badges monthly if they are able to actively travel to or from school, at least once a week for the entire month.

Youth Schools Games and Yeovil Schools' Games Association

  • We partake in numerous competitions throughout the year against local schools and have progressed to many Level 3 finals (county).
  • Through these experiences we aim to promote and encouage a love for physical activity with these core values:
