Year 4 Information
Welcome to Year 4!
Class 9 - Mrs Camp teaches in Class 9.
Class 10 - Miss Entwistle teaches in Class 10.
OUR CURRICULUM FOR THE SPRING TERM:
ENGLISH
We are starting the Spring Term with our narrative unit based on a short animated film ‘La Luna’. We will be describing a character using noun phrases expanded by the addition of modifying adjectives, nouns and preposition phrases. We will be introduced to personification and use this to describe a setting. We will be using complex sentence and start using relative clauses. We will then write the story adding speech (the animated film has no speech).
Grammar – As well as looking at grammar during our Writing lessons, we will continue our weekly stand-alone Grammar lessons. This term, we will be covering paragraphs, noun phrases, pronouns, and fronted adverbials. We will also continue to practise using different sentence structures within our writing (simple, compound and complex sentences).
The children will also complete a daily Grammar Skills sheet which focuses on all aspects of spelling, punctuation, and grammar, including dictation.
Guided Reading is taught daily and the children will explore a range of non-fiction, fiction, play scripts and poetry texts. We use echo and choral reading to help develop children’s fluency.
MATHEMATICS
In maths, the children will follow the concrete, pictorial and abstract approach. This term the children will learn:
- Multiplication and division
- Area
- Fractions
- Decimals
Arithmetic is taught alternately each week and focuses on the four operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division as well as fractions.
The children will also complete a daily Maths Skills sheet which focuses on the four operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division as well as fractions.
TOPIC – DT, GEOGRAPHY, art & Science
In DT, we will be linking with our Science unit from last half term of Sound. We will be making our own musical instrument. We will be using the DT process of : research, design, prototype, make, evaluate.
In Geography, we will be building on our prior knowledge of mountains and learning about Earthquakes and Volcanoes. During this unit, we will begin to understand more about the causes of natural disasters and their effects on the environment as well as explore the layers of the earth.
As part of our Art, children will look at the work of the artist George Seurat, and experiment with his technique of pointillism to create an image of a volcanic eruption.
As part of the whole school Geography and History day, ‘People and Places Day’, we will be learning about Mahatma Ghandi, leader of the Indian independence movement, whose philosophy of nonviolence inspired civil rights movements globally, including in the UK.
In Science, we will be looking at our Living Things unit. In this unit we will be looking grouping living things. Classifying animals into different categories such as invertebrates and vertebrates. We will look at different habitats and why that animal is good in that environment.
RE
During Spring 1, we will be looking at Judaism Beliefs and Practices. We will be considering the question - How special is the relationship Jews have with God?
In Spring 2, we will be focusing on Christianity – Salvation, where we will consider the question - Why do Christians call the day Jesus died ‘Good Friday’?
PSHE
This term we are focusing on the unit ‘How we grow and change’.. This will include managing our emotions, building happy and healthy relationships and during the second half of the term, we will learn about puberty and how our bodies change as we grow.
PE
PE is taught twice a week. This term in our indoor PE, we will be working from our REAL PE programme – Gymnastics.
In our outdoor PE, we will be doing Netball and Striking and Fielding (Cricket).
Class 10 will continue to go Swimming until the 27th February.
Please ensure your child wears the appropriate kit to school on PE days on:
Wednesday and Thursday (Class 9)
Wednesday and Friday (Class 10) (Wednesday and Thursday once swimming finishes.
Music:
We will be looking at the music of Abba this term, as we explore the Charanga Music unit – Mamma Mia. We will then complete a composer study of - ‘Carnival of the Animals’ by Camille Saint Saens.
MFL
This term in French, we will be learning how to count in multiples of 10, up to 100 as well as learning how to say the names of various foods in French. Towards the end of the term, we will focus on Easter.
SPELLING AND HOMEWORK
Homework will be set and homework books will be sent home every FRIDAY and are due back in on the following WEDNESDAY please.
The children will be expected to complete the following:
1) Learn their set spellings each week, ready for the test on Thursday.
2) Times Table Rockstars
3) One piece of Maths homework focusing on an arithmetic skill.
4) Handwriting practise
Our new Homework approach means it is not compulsory but there are rewards points the children can earn towards prizes.
