Spring Term

English

This term, the children will be developing their narrative skills through a unit based on the text Stone Age Boy. This links directly to our Autumn History topic, allowing pupils to apply and deepen their understanding of the Stone Age within their writing.

Later in the term, the children will be producing an information text/biography about an inspirational individual. Throughout this unit, we will revisit key writing skills, including the use of past and present tense, the formation of questions and statements, and the appropriate use of sub‑headings and paragraphs.

Grammar
Grammar will continue to be taught weekly. Our focus areas will include sentence structure, conjunctions, adverbs, prepositions, inverted commas, and the use of the present perfect tense within writing.

Guided Reading
Guided Reading sessions will take place weekly. This term, the children will explore a range of texts designed to develop their ability to answer both literal and inferential questions across fiction and non‑fiction.

Maths

his term, the children will be focusing on two key areas of learning:

  • Multiplication and Division, including the use of formal written methods
  • Fractions, developing both conceptual understanding and procedural fluency

Arithmetic will continue to be taught on alternating weeks. These sessions focus on securing the four operations: column addition, column subtraction, column multiplication, and the bus stop method for division.

We will also continue to use IXL to support and personalise learning. Children will regularly complete tasks tailored to their individual needs in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division to strengthen their fluency and confidence.

Geography

This term, the children will be learning about Britain and the United Kingdom. They will explore the four countries that make up the UK, along with their capital cities and a range of other significant cities. Using atlases and maps, the children will also investigate key rivers and surrounding seas. In addition, they will compare the physical geography of Scotland and England, developing their understanding of similarities and differences between regions within the UK.

History

At the end of our Spring term, we will be visiting the Roman Baths to kick-start our History topic all about the Romans! We will begin to explore what it would have been like to live during this part of history with a deep focus on invasions and the spread of the Roman Empire. We look into how Roman people lived and delve into key people such as Boudicca and Julius Caesar.

Science – The Human Body
In this topic, the children will be focussing on a number of areas such as: nutrition, skeleton types, functions of a skeleton and muscles.

Computing

The children will look at programming in two units: ‘Coding’ and ‘Route Planners’. The first unit builds on learning from previous coding units. Children will explore timers, the repeat command and the importance of nesting code. They will build up to using design documentation to code a program. In the second unit, children will plan algorithms and write code that includes angles of turn to create routes for screen turtles, testing them using 2Go. Children will experiment with using the repeat command to make shapes that have 90° and 45° angles.

Physical Education

PE is taught twice a week. Outside this term, the children will focus on Dynamic Balance, Coordination and Tennis Skills. Inside we will be learning about the shapes, turns and circles we can make in dance. Then, we will be focussing on how different movements can fit into a routine.

Religious Education:

In the first half term, children will focus on the ‘People of God’ and look specifically at the story of Noah’s Ark, the idea of covenant and what it is like to follow God.

The second half term will look at ‘Salvation’ focussing on Good Friday and why it has adopted this name.

PSHE and Relationships

During these lessons, we will discuss and look at:

  • How can we describe our feelings?
  • How do we change and grow?

Homework, spelling and reading

All Homework will be given out on a Friday and due back in on a Wednesday.

Weekly spellings will also be given out on a Friday and their spelling test will take place on Thursday.

We kindly encourage you to listen to your child read at least three times a week. Please write a brief comment in their reading record after each session so that we can monitor their progress and provide appropriate support.
