English

During the first half-term our writing links to our history topic on Nurturing Nurses. We will begin by exploring the text The Day the Crayons Quit. We will learn the features of formal and informal letters. We will write letters based on the book. We will then move on to writing letters in role as Florence Nightingale's sister and Florence Nightingale herself. Throughout the term we will continue improve on the basics from year 1, especially using simple sentence punctuation correctly. We will explore question marks and exclamation marks and begin to join sentences using words such as 'and' and 'but'.

After half-term we will be exploring the narrative 'Jim and the Beanstalk'. This wonderful story links with our science topic on plants. During this part of the unit, we will be exploring characters and themes in fairy tales. We will learn about adverbs and begin to use them in our own writing. We will then move on to explore non-chronological texts about plants. We will find out about the features of non-chronological reports, including headings and subheadings. We will then be writing our own non-chronological reports to link with our science topic.

In Year 2, Guided Reading will take place once a week and will be a mix of small group guided reading and whole class reading and activities. Texts will be closely matched to the children’s reading level and where possible will link to our writing unit or topic for the term.

Phonics and Spellings

The children will continue using the ‘Little Wandle’ phonics scheme.  During the spring term we will  move onto spelling.  As part of our learning, the children will be tested at school using the words they have learnt during the week.  This will be incorporated into a dictation activity rather than a formal spelling test and we will NOT therefore be sending words home to learn. We will be regularly practising and using the year 1 and 2 common exception words throughout the year with the expectation that the children can correctly spell as many of these as possible by the end of the year.

Topic

History

In the first half of the spring term, we will learn about the Florence Nightingale, Edith Cavell and Mary Seacole in our ‘Nurturing Nurses’ topic. We will be exploring why these women are significant people in British History and the legacies that they have left behind.

DT

In DT during the first half term, we will be exploring different sewing techniques in order to learn how to make a 'Pocket Hug'.

Science

Our science topic is ‘Ready, Steady Grow!’ and includes the science topic of ‘Plants' which focuses on what plants need to grow. We will label parts of a plant and have a go at growing some plants ourselves!

Religious Education

Our first unit is ‘God’, in which we will explore the Christian faith, the key aspects to the religion and why God is so important to Christians.  Our second unit of this term is ‘Christianity – Salvation’ and we will be exploring why Easter is so important to Christians.

Computing

We are continuing to use Purple Mash for computing and lessons will once again be blocked over the course of one week each half-term.  We will start by looking at presenting ideas. E-safety is an important aspect of the children's learning and will be revisited each half-term.

PSHE and Relationships

During these lessons, we will discuss and look at:

Spring 1: Staying Healthy. This unit will be focusing on how we can look after ourselves and live a healthy life.

Spring 2: Similarities & Differences. This unit we will be focusing on ourselves and how we are similar or different to those around us.

PE

In our indoor sessions, we will be using the Real PE syllabus to teach footwork and balance.

In our outdoor sessions, we will be playing invasion games.

Homework

Homework pouches will be sent home every Friday and are due back in school by the following Wednesday. Our homework is in line with the new whole-school homework scheme which means that it is not compulsory, but that the children can earn reward points to redeem against prizes.  Much of the homework can be completed independently.

In addition to the set homework, there is always the option for your child to complete an additional My Maths activity or to practise their times tables using Times Tables Rock Stars if they wish.  Children need to continue reading regularly at home. Reading for a few minutes several times a week is much more effective than reading once a week for a longer time, or not reading at all!

Useful Websites:

www.play.ttrockstars.com/

Times tables Rockstars - this is a resource that can be used at home. All children have been given a username and password to use this resource which is stuck on the last page of their homework book.

Every week, additional homework is set on this website for Year 2. The activities are based on concepts that we have learned in class. Please note that this homework is optional and not compulsory.

Provides a useful reading list for children that are currently in year 2.

https://www.phonicsplay.co.uk/resources/phase/5n

An interactive website that helps children to practise and consolidate their phonics. The phase 5 games would be useful to keep the phonemes and graphemes learnt at the end of year 1 ticking over, with phases 3 and 4 useful for children who still need more practice at earlier phonics.

An interactive website that helps children with their spelling.

A great website that provides a range of activities covering literacy, numeracy and science.
